One can read about and imagine people and places far away in cultures very different from one's own but nothing can replace first-hand experience.  During my time in Hungary and Macedonia I soaked up new sights, smells, sounds, tastes and feelings. It was wonderful to see ancient churches and buildings. It was amazing to see Roman ruins almost 2000 year old. I was surprised by the friendliness of almost everyone I met. Hungarians and Macedonians alike greeted me warmly with their words, their smiles, and their eyes. It was rewarding to make new friends and in so doing to be reminded that it is not difficult at all to find a common bond with someone who has a cultural perspective quite unlike one's own.
